In the food industry, UV tunnels have become an established part of production lines. Companies and consumers looking for a higher quality in standards and a healthier environment are opting for systems that are chemical free, cost effective and more environmentally friendly. UV tunnels are an ideal solution as they built to kill off bacteria using UV light making them safe and hygienic.
What is UV-C
UV-C decontamination is the process of using ultraviolet light in the C band to inactivate contaminants allowing for the elimination of harmful bacteria on surfaces and food without the use of harsh and toxic chemicals. In food production, irradiation is used to kill bacteria such as E.Coli and Salmonella. It prevents cross-contamination of allergens and pathogenic micro-organisms in food, beverages and the packaging used. The shelf life and nutritional value are raised as harmful bacteria and viruses are instantly killed off.
Benefits of use in the food industry
One of the main origins of bacterial infections in food is caused by contaminated packaging. UV tunnels are valuable in amending this as part of an effective sterilisation process. They use UV light to sterilise all surfaces such as conveyor belts, containers, and bottle tops that come in contact with food products. The maturation of the products is then delayed, helping to maintain the freshness for longer and extending the shelf life.
UV tunnels are also beneficial in disinfecting food items and packaging during the manufacturing process, eliminating harmful bacteria and micro-organisms ensuring a higher quality of product.
