Outside office hours, when their internal courier service is not available, hospitals rely on local taxi companies or couriers to transfer urgently required blood, donor breast milk or other medical supplies. This costs the average hospital tens of thousands of pounds.
Blood Bike groups like Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes undertake this task at no cost at all to the NHS. Their highly-trained volunteers, supported by specially designed equipment and vehicles, underpins the valuable work of the NHS. They operate from 7pm to 6am Monday to Friday and for 24-hour periods all weekend.
Although an independent charity, they operate to the very high standards of the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes – NABB.
In order to ensure a first class service to the NHS Hospitals of Nottinghamshire; although they currently have 3 bikes in use, due to demand they are desperately in need of another bike. To support the high costs involved with the bikes and the running costs, Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes have formed the ‘100 CC Club’ by inviting 100 companies to join and donate £100.00 towards a new bike and the running costs of it. Asmech Systems Ltd are proud to have been able to join the 100 CC Club and donate towards the fantastic cause which is helping them to save lives, help premature babies receive the very best start in life, reducing mortality rates and promoting significant benefits for their ongoing health, and at the same time saving money for the NHS.
Pete Hauton (a friend and ex Asmech employee) is currently volunteering for Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes; collecting and transporting blood and medical supplies to hospitals in the Nottinghamshire area.
All of the riders are volunteers, and the organisation do not receive any money from the NHS or Government (everything has to be raised by the organisation themselves)
Please see below a link to their website, which gives more detailed information on who they are and exactly what they do.
There is also a page on the website (100 CC Club), which allows people or companies to sponsor or donate.
